Arts in Public Places

Art not only imitates
nature, but also completes it
deficiencies. - Aristotle
IMPORTANT NOTE:
What a shame that so many governmental orgs feel the
need to change web page addresses for THEIR convenience every year. Doesn't
ANYONE in GOV realize that this de-links them from the audiences they are
supposedly trying to reach! In 2007 I had to remove about HALF of this once
remarkable collection of links. What a shame for us all! Richard

Connecticut's Art in Public

that not less than 1% of the cost of construction or substantial renovation of
publicly accessible state buildings be allocated for the commission or
purchase of artworks for that building. Since the program's inception, over
280 works of art have been installed at 54 sites in 28 cities and towns in

accomplished artists from the region in an exhibit that promises to be an
exceptionally car-azy experience. Art-O-Mobiles, Art in Public Places is
designed as an interactive exhibit appealing to all the senses, engaging
adults and children alike". This project from the Summer of 2001 is an
example of a public arts project that is theme based. This is a very nicely
designed resource that is also a very fun site to visit. The page itself is a
work of art, in keeping with the year's theme. It is hoped that this page will
stay active as an example of an exciting type of public art project.

A
Guide to Public Art in Cincinnati -
Downtown Cincinnati offers an outstanding collection of public art that is a
125 year legacy of the city's history, cultural attitudes and aesthetic taste.
Earlier works use the human figure in heroic or allegorical monuments to
commemorate people or events important to local history. Recent additions are
abstract forms which have no recognizable subjects, but instead express
thoughts or emotions. This is a well-indexed richly illustrated website
collection.

Cleveland Public Art

Texas
City
of Austin Art in Public Places - For over
a decade, the City of Austin Art in Public Places program has made it possible
for talented artists of local and national renown to enhance public spaces
throughout the city with works of art ranging from outdoor sculptures and
murals to functional works integrated into architecture. The City of Austin
was the first municipality in Texas to make a commitment to include works of
art in construction projects when it established the Art in Public Places
program in 1985. By ordinance, 1% of budgets are allocated to commission or
purchase art for public sites such as the airport, convention center,
libraries, parks, police stations, and recreation centers. The site now has a
nifty searchable database of artist and art works information and
images!
City
of San Antonio Public Art and Design Enhancement Program - "In
1996, the City of San Antonio Arts and Cultural Affairs Department established
the Public Art Program, which allocated one percent (1%) for commissioned
artists to provide design services, and to create artworks within building and
parks projects. The purpose of the program was to establish a process that
supported San Antonio's long tradition of artist created enhancements that
have contributed to the City's cultural and historical sense of place."
This is a great website. It includes an extensive catalog of images, well
organized and easy to navigate. Be sure to click on the COSAS (Catalog
of On-Site Artist Services) link to see a program that should be an
inspiration to other cities worldwide!
Utah
Utah Public
Art Program - The 1985 Utah Legislature passed a
1% for Art bill allocating public funds for art to be incorporated into new
and/or renovated state public buildings. This is a basic text-only information
site.
Vermont
Vermont Art in State Buildings Program - Simple text-only
site. The strength of this site though is in its complete profiles of proposed
projects, giving potential artists the tools they would need to submit an
effective application. The site does not seem to have a gallery or images,
though.
Washington DC
Washington DC's
Art in Public Places Program - established by the D.C. Commission on

offering only a slight overview. At this review, page had not been updated
since 1997. A Contact phone number is given, however.

civic resource diverse in expression and artforms. Over 1,000 artworks are

pretty web album of public art in the Seattle Washington area.
Wisconsin
Wisconsin
Percent for Art Program - Established in 1980 for the purpose of
placing artwork in the public setting, both to beautify our public buildings
and urban environments and to draw attention to the wealth of artistic
expertise within our region. Under the legislation for the program, two-tenths
of one percent of the total construction costs of new state building or
renovation projects is designated for the commission or purchase of artwork.
Only state buildings with a high degree of public access are eligible for
Percent for Art funding. In addition to the unique features of this particular
program mentioned above, another is the allowance for the purchase (with
conditions) of pre-existing artwork under the program. This is a
text-based information only based site. It includes no gallery.
