Women not ALLOWED in ballet until composer Jean Baptiste Lully forced the issue in the academy established by Louis XIV in 1681
1748 La Mettrie proposes the concept of Man as Machine
July 7,1796 Charles Didelo's ballet Flora and the Zephyr believed first to use dancing on pointe
1815 ETA Hoffman writes, Der Sandman
Sept. 17, 1821 Arthur St. Leon is born in Paris
March 12, 1832 La Sylphide - The FIRST of the Romantic Ballets
Dec. 16, 1834 Arthur St Leon gives his first performance as a violinist.
July 1835 St. Leon makes his debut as a dancer in Munich.
Feb. 21, 1836 Leo Delibes is born
1841 Giselle debuts
April 17, 1845 Arthur St Leon marries Neapolitan ballerina Fanny Cerrito, one of the top ballet stars of the day. Marriage lasts 6 years. It adds to his stature. Offered himself and her in "package deals"
1852 St. Leon publishes a book outlining his invention of the first choreographic notation system based on a depiction of the dancer as opposed to the paths taken.
1859 Appointed Ballet Master of the Imperial Theatres of Russia. Succeeded Jules Perrot.
1864 St. Leon's The Humpbacked Horse is Ballet Humpbacked Horse was known for its incorporation of Russian themes and included a grand series of dances representing the nationalities living in Russia
May 25, 1870 Coppelia Debuts - the LAST ballet of the Romantic era
Sept. 2, 1870 St. Leon Dies of a heart attack
Sept. 23, 1870 The Seige of Paris which lasts until January takes its toll. Giuseppina Bozacchi, the original Swanilda dies on her 17th birthday.
June 14, 1876 Delibes' ballet Sylvia debuts at The Paris Opera
1884 Petipa adaptation of Coppelia premieres in Russia
March 11, 1887 Coppelia makes its debut in America at The National Opera Company, NY
Jan. 16, 1891 Delibes dies
1892 Nutcracker Premieres
Dec. 27th 1896 Coppelia adaptation presented by The Royal Danish Ballet
Feb. 28,1910 Anna Pavlova makes her American debut dancing Swanilda with the Metropolitan Opera in NY. This marks the debut as well in America of the Russian adaptation.
1958 The role of Franz still danced by a woman at the Paris Opera Ballet
1973 Piere Lacotte stages a re-creation of the original Coppelia at The Paris Opera
July 17, 1974 NY City Ballet debuts it's Balanchine adaptation with Alexandra Danilova in the role of Swanilda.
