Performing Arts Medicine Resources

Applying lessons from the work of art.

This article speaks to how what has been learned through performing arts medicine, can relate to health issues in the workplace at large.

German Association on Physiology of Music and Performing Arts Medicine

Deutsche Gesellschaft für Musikphysiologie und Musikermedizin) "The Purpose of the Association is the promotion of science, research and teaching in the field of physiology and pathophysiology of performing music as well as pathology and clinic of physical and psychological deseases of the musician. This includes the improvement of preventive, diagnostic and therapeutic measures. "

International Arts Medicine Association  

The International Arts-Medicine Association is a non-profit organization formed in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1985 by Richard A. Lippin, M.D., IAMA founding president and president through 1995. The organization has about 300 members in 20 countries. The IAMA purpose is to provide a forum for interdisciplinary, international communication between arts and health professionals. Members include clinicians, educators, researchers and artists who have an interest in one or more of the many aspects of the relationships between arts and health.

The International Foundation for Performing Arts Medicine

"The International Foundation for Performing Arts Medicine (IFPAM) was formed to alleviate the burden of seeking grants for Medical research from Performing Arts Medicine specialists, to support programs in injury prevention as well as disseminate medical information to artists. IFPAM publishes the only health newsletter, Performance Pulse, written for artists, and a resource directory. The Foundation also conducts injury prevention workshops and has become a central resource center providing artists with immediate help by means of physician referrals and general health related information."

Médecine des Arts  

French-based resource with text in both French and English. "Médecine des Arts has established various arts medicine departments in different cities in France and other countries. The aim is to develop research in the medico/scientific field with special emphasis on artists' health problems, artistic practices, etc. making this information available to artists, teachers and therapists." The site offers an index of the Journal of the same name, books to order (mostly in French), 

The Performing Arts Medicine Association (PAMA)  

An organization of physicians and other allied professionals    dedicated to improving the health care and treatment of performing artists through education, research, and teaching. The website offers an extensive collection of related links.   

Performing Arts Medicine Association Journal

Only a table of contents is offered on this website but it does give a taste of the resources and knowledge base which is out there. 

Resources of Special Value to Dancers

 

International Association for Dance Medicine and Science  

This is a service organization for members of the health and dance communities. The organization sponsors conferences, a journal, newsletter, and other activities. 

The American Anorexia/Bulimia Association, Inc.  

The American Anorexia Bulimia Association is a national, non-profit organization of concerned members of the public and healthcare industry dedicated to the prevention and treatment of eating disorders. Through education, advocacy and research, AABA serves as a national authority on eating disorders and related concerns. AABA promotes social attitudes that enhance healthy body image and works to overcome. This page is not very large but a bibliography of publications is offered. 

Dancing Thru Pregnancy  

A training program, based in Stony Creek, CT. The organization offers classes for women in pregnancy, after pregnancy, and in other key portions of their lives. The website offers a number of resources for others browsing the internet. 

Eating Disorders in Ballet Dancers   

This is a very large website, and is well organized. Many topics are covered and useful information and explanations are offered. The site goes well beyond the issues related specifically to dancers.  

Eating Disorder Referral and Information Center  

"We are dedicated to the prevention and treatment of eating disorders. Edreferral.com provides information and treatment resources for all forms of eating disorders. Our goal is to provide assistance, in the form of information and resources, to those suffering with eating disorders to get them started on the road to recovery and healthy living."  Site includes a nifty referral utility.

Internet Mental Health Encyclopedia  

This site offers articles on a wide range of mental health issues including eating disorders.

Resources on The Arts and Aids

ArtAIDS 

A  creative  website  commemorating  and   celebrating  the  fight against  AIDS. ArtAIDS is an evolving project that showcases art work to celebrate and commemorate lives, individual voices and creativity - touch on the continual impact of AIDS. Interesting artwork and design but you'll need a powerful internet connection and mega-monitor to experience it in it's fullest form.

The Estate Project for Artists with AIDS.  

This excellent website provides the resources for preserving the work of artists with aids as well as offering a number of arts services including those dealing with estate planning. This is a well organized and informative website. 

Visual AIDS 

Strives to increase public awareness of AIDS through the visual arts, creating programs of exhibitions, events and publications, and working in partnership with artists, galleries, museums and AIDS organizations. By mobilizing the visual arts communities, Visual AIDS raises money to provide direct services to artists living with HIV/AIDS.

Resources for Artists in Crisis

  The Actors' Fund  

For people on the stage and behind the scenes, in front of the camera and behind the lens. It's for agents and announcers, carpenters and clowns, actors and dancers, magicians and musicians, producers and free agents, stage hands and singers. People in film and theatre, TV and radio, music, dance and opera, and the full spectrum of other entertainment media have always turned to The Actors' Fund when some personal or family crisis threatens their well-being.
