A Citizen of the Arts . . . Feel free to share this publication but please credit Richard Finkelstein of Artslynx if you do. It's his only "pay" [RETURN TO THE ARTICLES INDEX] Is a citizen of ALL the artsThe best artists are those who recognize the power of ALL the arts! After all, "there's only ONE show business"! Every aspect of the arts scene informs every other aspect when things are at their best. Just as you may be quick to "hate" another style, discipline, methodology, or artist, remember there are those as quick to "hate" your own work and that of your own branch of the tree we all live on. Time to disband that most awful of organizations: "Artists against the Arts". Is informedThe artist CITIZEN does not create or observe or participate in a vacuum. They recognize the arts as an industry, a profession, a discipline. As such they strive to learn more about their own art, and the arts of others. They do this by attending lectures and workshops, joining arts associations and guilds, seeing the work of others at every opportunity, reading newspapers and news magazines, subscribing to arts publications and journals. Continually attends performances & exhibitsThe Citizen of the arts regularly attends art exhibitions in a variety of media, opera, theatre, ballet, modern dance, folk and ethnic arts programs, Performance art, music concerts, etc. You never know where inspired art will strike. Do not cut off your options!Recognizes a responsibility to educationThe Citizen artist recognizes their debt to our education system and recognizes the arts as a powerful positive force in the educational process. The citizen artist does not miss an opportunity to demonstrate these facts! Is tolerantThe citizen of the arts does not rush to arbitrary judgement but rather uses each performance and exhibit as an opportunity to explore new perspectives. It may be that the limitation is not in the artist but in the observer! Is active in the larger communityA person cannot be a true citizen of the arts without being a citizen of larger communities! If we hope for a world where the community at large sees that they have a stake in nurturing the arts, then we have a responsibility to realize that WE have a stake in nurturing and participating fully in the community.Votes!Lincoln was WRONG! It is NOT "Government of the people by the people for the people" but rather, Government of the people, by the PARTICIPANTS, for the PARTICIPANTS! You either have a stake in the process or you are out of the picture. The most power goes to those participating to the greater extent! Voting is NOT enough by itself when the "other side" does more!Serves as a positive exampleGone are the days of the romantic artist/outcast, the Bohemian chap who could live "outside of the envelope! Artists still play a valuable role in providing useful alternative perspectives but to assume one lives apart from the community and the society is a dangerous supposition. Is articulate & shares at every opportunity |
